Statement of principle

Streets Ahead Rwanda only keeps information which is necessary for our operations. We use efforts to minimise data requests, safely discard any unnecessary data and securely store whatever data we have to keep. We never sell our data. We do not share data with third parties beyond what is legally required, unless that party gives their express consent and is aware of the data being shared.

How do we collect information?

Most of the personal information we collect has been received directly from you. You may give us your name and contact information or other personal data:

  • When you fill out a form on our website.

  • When you communicate with us, for example if you make an enquiry.

  • When you engage with us on social media.

  • When you make a donation to us, and when you give us a Gift Aid declaration.

  • When you apply for a job with us.

    • If you volunteer for us or our Rwandan partner SACCA.

    • If you enter into a contract with us, for example if you are one of our suppliers.

We may also receive information about you when you interact with third parties with whom we work. For example, when you have made a donation to us through a third party website (CAFDonate, VirginMoneyGiving or JustGiving) and given permission to share your information with us, or when you make orders for goods in our online Shop using Squarespace.

We may collect aggregated or anonymous information when you visit our website or interact with our content. For example, we may collect information about the services you use and how you use them, for instance when you visit our website.

What information do we collect and how do we use it?

Personal information

When you supply information such as your name or contact details, we are legally obliged to ensure that this information is only used for the purpose for which it was provided, and to ensure that it is stored in a secure manner. 

When you provide personal data, such as your name or email address, you are consenting to the collection and use of this information for the purpose specified. We will only communicate further with you by email or telephone if you have given us your specific consent for that form of communication.

Collection and use of personal information in relation to our online Shop is dealt with as follows. Our online shop is hosted by Squarespace. They provide us with a secure e-commerce platform that allows us to sell our products to you. Your data is stored through Squarespace’s data storage, databases and the general Squarespace application. They store your data on a secure server behind a firewall.

When you buy something on this website, we collect personal information from you to fulfil the order. We may collect information, such as your:

  • Billing and shipping address

  • Details relating to your purchase

  • Email address

  • Name

  • Phone number

As you go through checkout, this site may auto-complete your shipping and billing address by sharing what you type with the Google Places API and returning suggestions to you to improve your checkout experience.

We may email you with messages about your order or account activity. For example, we may email you to tell you that:

  • You’ve created a Customer Account

  • Your Customer Account password has been reset or updated

  • You’ve made a purchase

  • Your order has shipped

It’s not possible to unsubscribe from these messages.

We share your contact information with Squarespace, our website hosting provider, so they can send these emails to you on our behalf.

Sensitive personal data

Under data protection law certain categories of personal information are recognised as sensitive, including health information and information regarding race, religious beliefs and political opinions. We do not collect sensitive personal data about you.

Financial information

In order to process financial transactions, you may be asked to provide your bank or credit card details by Streets Ahead Rwanda's preferred online donation processing providers (JustGiving, CAFDonate and VirginMoneyGiving). You can donate securely online and no cardholder information is ever passed unencrypted in a web browser. You can be completely secure in the knowledge that nothing you enter as part of a secure transaction can be examined, used or modified by any third parties attempting to gain access to sensitive information.

The payment processor we use for online Shop purchases, Stripe, is PCI compliant. Sensitive card data related to such purchases is never handled by Squarespace, the provider of our e-commerce platform, or ourselves. It goes directly to the payment processor’s servers. Your purchase transaction data is stored only as long as is necessary to complete your purchase transaction. After that is complete, your purchase transaction information is deleted. Technical information

If you interact with our website we or our service providers may collect certain technical information, such as your IP address. An IP address provides the location of server you are contacting us from. Technical information is collected in the following specific instances:

Our website: This is hosted by Squarespace. Squarespace collects personal data when you visit this website, including:

  • Information about your browser, network and device

  • Web pages you visited prior to coming to this website

  • Your IP address

Squarespace needs the data to run this website, and to protect and improve its platform and services. Squarespace analyzes the data in a de-personalized form.

Font files: This website uses font files from Google Fonts and Adobe Fonts. To properly display this site to you, servers where the font files are stored may receive personal information about you, including:

  • Information about your browser, network, or device

  • Your IP address

In addition technical information may be collected by us or our service providers through the use of cookies. This is a particular subset of technical information and you have a degree of discretion over whether this data is collected.

Our website uses cookies. A cookie is a small piece of data saved with your computer’s web browser. Cookies do not have access to your computer or browser information, they are only sent back to the website at the next visit from that browser. We use cookies so that we can track how users navigate through our site, in order to enable us to evaluate and improve our site. We use this information to compile anonymous statistical data on the use of our website.

Some of the content on our website is provided by third parties, such as YouTube for hosted video. When you visit a page containing embedded content, a cookie may be set. We do not have any control over these cookies and you should check the relevant third party website for more information about these. How long do we hold your personal data for?

For marketing purposes we will only process your information for as long as you wish us to. Your personal data will be held indefinitely until you notify us that you no longer wish for us to hold your information. We regularly update contact details with any changes.

For other personal information we will retain it for no longer than is necessary, and in accordance with our Data Protection policy. All those involved in the running of the organisation and volunteering for the organisation are required to sign this policy.

Can you gain access to your personal information?

You may request a copy of the personal information relating to you which is kept on file by Streets Ahead Rwanda (for which a small fee may be charged) by contacting the Data Protection Officer at info@streetsaheadrwanda.org.uk or at our registered office address.

Updating my information and communication preferences

If any of your personal information changes or you find that our records are out of date, or if you wish to change the way you receive communications from us or the nature of communications you receive, please email the Data Protection Officer at info@streetsaheadrwanda.org.uk.

Children’s data

When you register with Streets Ahead Rwanda, you are stating that you are over the age of 13. You are agreeing that any information that you provide to Streets Ahead Rwanda about yourself upon registration or at any time thereafter is true.
